Position Summary

The Vice President of Programs & Services is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and provides strategic and operational leadership across all of the organization’s direct service programs. This role is responsible for ensuring that programs are mission-aligned, outcomes-driven, fiscally sound, and delivered with compassion and excellence.

The VP will lead a team of program directors and managers, foster a culture of accountability and innovation, and serve as a key voice in strategic planning, community partnerships, and service design. The ideal candidate is a seasoned nonprofit leader who combines deep programmatic knowledge with strong business acumen and people leadership skills.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Program Leadership

  • Provide strategic oversight and direction across all programs and services to ensure alignment with organizational mission, goals, and values.
  • Lead the development and implementation of programmatic goals, KPIs, and evaluation frameworks to assess impact and drive improvement.
  • Identify new opportunities to expand or enhance services based on community need, funding landscape, and organizational capacity.
  • Represent the organization externally in partnerships, coalitions, and funder meetings.

Operational Oversight

  • Supervise program directors/managers overseeing multiple service lines (e.g., housing, workforce development, mental health, youth services, etc.).
  • Ensure programs operate within budget and comply with funder and regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with finance, HR, compliance, and advancement departments to ensure seamless operations and grant alignment.
  • Drive systems improvements to enhance program quality, efficiency, and client satisfaction.

People and Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing, mission-driven program team.
  • Promote a culture of equity, inclusivity, learning, and collaboration.
  • Ensure staff are supported through appropriate training, supervision, and performance management.

Community Engagement & Advocacy

  • Build and maintain relationships with community leaders, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and advocate for the organization’s mission and services in public forums.
  • Collaborate with the Advancement team on impact narratives, grant applications, and reports.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in social work, public administration, nonprofit management, or related field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in the nonprofit or public sector, including at least 5 years managing diverse program teams.
  • Deep knowledge of and commitment to [population served or field, e.g., family services, housing insecurity, youth development].
  • Demonstrated success in strategic program development, evaluation, and scaling.
  • Strong fiscal management skills and experience overseeing program budgets and funder reporting.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and cross-cultural leadership skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) principles and trauma-informed practices.
