Summary POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Lifeguard position at the Valley Shore YMCA maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas and creates a positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Duties - Maintains active surveillance of the pool area, continuously scanning the entire pool and deck area.
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model (Prevent, Recognize, Activate EAP, Rescue, Emergency Care, Report).
- Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants and other staff.
- Knows, understands and consistently applies safety and pool rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Ensures safe pool environment: Performs equipment checks and makes sure appropriate equipment is available as needed and checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Performs chemical testing and maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
- Keeps current on all required certifications and attends mandatory staff meetings and in-service trainings.
- Other tasks and projects as assigned
Requirements - Minimum age of 16.
- Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid.
- Current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
- Ability to maintain certification level of physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
